Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
