Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
